DnD Dice Sets: What Is in a Set and How to Choose One

A DnD dice set is seven polyhedral dice: a d4, d6, d8, d10, a percentile d10 marked in tens, a d12 and a d20. That covers every die the Dungeons & Dragons rules call for. Sets differ in material, weight, edge style, how easy the numbers are to read, and what comes in the box.

What is in a DnD dice set?

The D&D Basic Rules name the dice by the letter d plus the number of sides: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12 and d20. A set adds a second d10 so you can roll percentages. One d10 gives the tens digit and the other gives the ones. The rules note that some d10s are numbered in tens (00, 10, 20 and so on) to make the two easy to tell apart. That tens die is the “percentile” die in a seven-piece set.

How do you choose a DnD dice set?

Six things separate one set from another. Price is not on this list; the listings below show live prices.

1. All seven dice. Check that the set has a percentile d10 as well as a plain d10. Some bundles sell only a d20, or several d20s.
2. Material. Plastic and resin are the most common. Metal, gemstone, glass and wood behave differently on the table. Our dice materials comparison covers each one.
3. Weight. Heavier dice hit the table harder and can mark wood. If you want that heft, metal dice pair best with a tray.
4. Edges. Sharp or rounded (see below).
5. Readable numbers. Contrast between the ink and the die matters more than color. Glitter and liquid cores look striking but can hide the digits.
6. Set extras. Many sets come with a box, a tin or a drawstring bag. Critical Role’s Champion Dice Sets, for example, ship in a custom box with a velveteen drawstring bag.

Sharp edge or rounded dice: what is the difference?

Most game dice have rounded corners and edges. Casino dice have sharp corners and edges, as the Wikipedia dice article notes. Sharp edge RPG dice borrow that look. Critical Role, for example, describes its Champion sets as “sharp edged epoxy resin” dice.

Players pick sharp edges for the crisp, precise look. The tradeoff is fragility: thin corners can chip if they land on stone or tile. Rounded dice tumble longer and survive rough handling. Neither style is required by the rules.

Resin, metal or plastic dice?

Resin sets allow liquid cores and hand-poured color, which is why so many fancy sets are resin. Metal sets feel heavy and last for years, but they are the ones most likely to dent a table. Standard plastic sets are light and easy to replace, which makes them good group or spare dice.

What do you need besides the dice?

Dice travel and roll better with a little gear:

• A dice tray keeps rolls on the table and protects its surface, which matters most with metal or gemstone dice.
• A dice tower drops dice through baffles, so every roll tumbles the same way.

Which dice should a new player buy first?

A single plastic or resin seven-piece set is enough to start. Starter boxes also include dice: Wizards of the Coast lists “a set of 11 dice” in Starter Set: Heroes of the Borderlands, released September 16, 2025. If you play Pathfinder, you need the same seven shapes. Paizo’s own Pathfinder Second Edition sets hold a D4, D6, D8, D10, D00, D12 and D20.

How do you buy dice sets safely online?

• Count the dice in the photos and title. “7 piece” should mean one of each shape plus the percentile die.
• Read the material line. Metal dice can be solid or hollow, and a gemstone set should name the stone.
• Check the seller’s feedback and return policy. Handmade resin sets vary in color, and Critical Role itself warns that “exact coloration may vary between both dice and sets.”
• Know your protection. On eBay, the Money Back Guarantee covers items that never arrive or do not match the listing. Report a missing item within 30 days of the estimated delivery date, or request a return within 30 days of delivery.
• Be careful with licensed designs. A logo in the photo does not prove a license. Check the licensor’s own store first.
